Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage Gold Coast 2010

LENNOX Head dynamo Kirsten Ogden today captured the 16 and under Girls division of the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage, qualifying for the international leg of the prestigious junior surfing series.

Held in excellent conditions at Duranbah Beach, Ogden powerfully attacked the beach break peaks on the final day of competition, scoring a combined two-wave heat total of 16.00 (out of a possible 20) including a nine-point ride (out of a possible 10) in the final to defeat Amiya Doyle (Coolangatta, Qld), Brodie Doyle (Coolangatta, Qld) and Letarcia Hurt (Kingscliff, NSW).

Ogden said she was stoked to be crowned the Gold Coast Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage Champion.

“I was able to open the final with a really good ride and that helped my confidence throughout the heat,” said Ogden. “There haven’t been many waves around for quite a while so it was nice to get some good conditions during an event,” she said.

In similar style, Byron Bay rising star Soli Bailey outclassed his fellow finalists Tom Snellgrove (Lennox Head, NSW), Mitch Parkinson (Coolangatta, Qld) and Jake Cumberland (Kirra, Qld) to win the blue ribbon 16 and Under Boys division.

Bailey blitzed the final, scoring a combined two-wave heat total of 16.37 (out of a possible 20) including a near-perfect 9.87 ride (out of a possible 10). Meanwhile, Alyssa Lock and Zac Wightman captured victory in the 13 and under Girls and the 13 and under Boys Division respectively.

Getting grommets up is always a difficult task, especially when the swell isn’t doing much. We had been summoned by the boss to do a studio photo shoot down the coast at 9 in the morning. I didn’t even pack a board as the waves were looking like being tiny, so I just picked up a little fun 5”6 quad, off Phil Byrne in the Gong on the way, just in case there was a grovel.

The beaches on the way down were pretty small, and we were wondering if we would even get a chance to get wet at all. Darcy Phillips and Billy Kean were in the car with me. Darcy had never been down south, so he was frothing to sample some juice, something that didn’t look likely to happen.

The product photo shoot had been moved from the studio to the beach, as the bad weather had cleared. Taking our time and in no big rush to get down to the beach, we didn’t arrive at the beach till 10 o clock. The grommets hadn’t shut up for the last two and a half hours, so I was the first to jump out of the car, for a much needed break.

Wow, shock horror, there were waves!! Not just grovel either. The swell was a clean four to five feet, straight out of the south, with the tiniest hint of east. Winds were offshore NW; the tide was low, coming in. Shit, let’s hurry up and get this shoot over with!

Standing on the beach watching perfect five foots pits was punishing, the grommets were wigging out. The shoot broke all records, within an hour we were charging into the water. The rights were firing, but over the course of the last hour, the tide had slowly swallowed the barrelling rights up and left us with leftovers, but some fattish fun rights. Still though the grommets were stoked.

Knowing somewhere else would be firing, the call was made to head further south. Sometimes, this can end in disaster along this stretch of southern NSW coast, as the whole day can become a driving journey in search of the perfect wave, when it may not exist.

The first place we checked was going to be where we surfed not matter what, the grommets were back to their annoying best, and I needed a break again. The waves looked fun enough in the four foot range. So we charged out. Brett Burcher, and a host of up and coming south coast grommets were in the water being coached by Barton Lynch.

The waves, to our surprise were actually really fun and for an hour or so started to really barrel. Darcy snapped his board, as some of the grommets including, Matty king, Russell Bierke and Chaz Raynor, were throwing themselves into double over head green rooms. It was great to see these little groms, really having a go!

All of us surfed till dark, except for Darcy because he only had the one board. The plan was to make the grommets surf that much that they passed out in the car on the way home. This worked until their stomachs demanded I stop at Maccas!

What was supposed to be a semi boring Sponno photo shoot, turned out to be a sick day. We totally lucked out this time!

Le Teenage Rampage débarque enfin en Europe, organisé par Ocean&Earth en partenariat avec CoolShoe, 69Slam, la Surfers Villa (Surf Camp de Seignosse) et le Hossegor Surf Club, cette compétition gratuite réunira samedi 19 septembre dès 9h les meilleurs riders de chaque catégorie.

3 divisions:
Groms : 14 et -
Juniors : 15 à 17 ans
Pro/Am : 18 et +

Le spot de compétition sera choisi dans le courant de la semaine en fonction des conditions (sur Seignosse ou Hossegor) et sera balisé le jour J.

Les inscriptions se font le samedi matin à 9 heures sur le site de compétition.

Le nombre de places est limité à 16 par catégorie alors les premiers inscrits seront les premiers servis!!!

De nombreux lots O+E, CoolShoe et 69Slam sont à gagner.

Duranbah, Gold Coast, Qld -- Mitchell James (Kingscliff, NSW) and Sarah Mason (Tugun, QLD) etched their names in history today, taking out the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage in epic conditions. With an increase in swell overnight and improved conditions greeting competitors on the final day of the event, the surfing that eventuated was of the highest order.

James, who had tore the Duranbah beachbreak to shreds over the course of the event, was superb. “I’m so stoked right now,” he said after accumulating a heat total of 14.90 (out of a possible 20); which was highlighted by a brilliant 8.50 point ride.

Defeating Sam Clift (Banora Point, NSW), Noa Deane (Coolangatta, QLD), Jayson Homan (Marcus Beach, QLD), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, James was just happy to make the final. “I had no real thought of winning the event,” he admitted. “I just wanted to do my best and if I made the final then so be it.”

Featuring surfers from as far south as northern NSW (north of Ballina River) and along the entire Queensland coastline, James was quick to point out the high standard of surfing on show. “The guys were all surfing so good,” he continued. “The waves were awesome, so everyone had a really good chance to surf as well as they could.”

The Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage provides an innovative and fresh approach to the traditional junior surfing competition in an effort to unearth the new wave of Australian surfing talent. One such talent was Sarah Mason (Tugun, QLD) who was on fire throughout the entire event - taking the 16 and under girls title with a crisp array manoeuvres.

Having been on a tear since the initial heat of competition, Mason accrued a total heat score of 13.50 (out of a possible 20) in the final, outpointing Brodie Doyle (Coolangatta, QLD), Eden Putland (Currumbin Waters, QLD), Codie Klein (Kingscliff, NSW).

In the 13 and under boys final it was event standout Eli Steele (Moffat Beach, QLD) who continued his excellent form accumulating a total heat score of 15.76 (out of a possible 20). Defeating Tommy Boucault (Ocean Shores, NSW), Izak Clifford (Marcus Beach, QLD) and Kai Hing (Wurtulla, QLD), Steele was dominant in his display.

Fellow Moffat Beach resident Renee Heazlewood took the 13 and under girls division, finishing ahead of Beth Palmer (Caloundra, QLD), Stephanie Single (Lennox Head, NSW) and Annie Palmer (Caloundra, QLD) who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Unlike other surfing competitions, the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage allows competitors (16 years and under) to surf three heats each without elimination instead of the traditional cutthroat format – with each surfer’s two highest scoring rides from each heat will be added together, along with bonus awarded according to the position the competitor finishes in each heat – something that creator, and former ASP World Tour surfer Phil Macdonald is proud of.

“The teenage rampage was a concept that was developed to promote confidence, experience and fun in all levels of junior surfing, from beginner to champion,” said Macdonald after the blue ribbon 16 years and under finals. “This event is more focused on the kids building confidence over the weekend as there is a greater focus on a bonus points and leader board system – hopefully we achieved that.”

The event, which is the one of four Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage events being staged throughout the year, is a qualifying event to the Ocean & Earth International Teenage Rampage to be held at Curl Curl in December.
